MPEG Surround compresses 5.1 audio further
Anyone who owns a nice home theater setup (or has friends who do) has experienced the immersion of 5.1 surround sound. The combination of two forward stereo speakers, a center speaker, two rear speakers, and a subwoofer provide a depth of sound that can convincingly simulate a three-dimensional environment.

In only six years, the DVD player has found a place in half the United States' 100 million households as its price has shrunk tenfold to less than $100. Analysts say the frenetic rate of consumer adoption has set an all-time record - outpacing sales of the transistor radio, the home computer, the CD player and the television itself.
According to research from the DVD Entertainment Group, an industry association, DVD manufacturers had sold 54 million players in the United States by the end last year.
The pace is 10 times faster than that of CD players and four times as fast as videocassette recorders.
FCC approves digital TV plug-and-play
Federal regulators adopted rules this week to speed the nation's transition to the clearer sights and sounds of digital television. The Federal Communications Commission voted 5-0 to approve standards for equipment that lets digital cable plug directly into TV sets without the need for a set-top box and a tangle of extra wires.
